PRACTICALS 

PROGRAM 

  1. Identification of starch, non –reducing sugars, reducing sugars, proteins, fats and oils using simple laboratory tests.
  2. Identification of parts and functions of the light microscope and use of light microscope to observe specimens.
  3. Use of electron micrographs to understand the structure of cellular components.
  4. Identification of different stages of mitosis and meiosis using microscopic slides.
  5. Laboratory experiment to demonstrate enzyme activity and to determine the effect of temperature on the rate of enzymatic reaction (starch - amylase)
  6. Determination of rate of photosynthesis by amount of oxygen released using Audus apparatus.
  7. Microscope observation of a cross section of C3 and C4 leaves with special reference to adaptations for photosynthesis.
  8. Determination of rate of respiration and respiratory quotient using germinating seeds.
  9. Observing and distinguishing bacteria and cyanobacteria under Light microphone.
  10. Use of electron micrographs to study morphological features of bacteria and cyanobacteria.
  11. Observation of morphological features of Euglena, Paramecium, Amoeba, Ulva, Diatoms, Sargassum, Gelidium.

  30. Explaining the major types of excretory structures in animals using 32 diagrams and charts
  31. Explain the organization of the human nervous system using 33 models/ diagrams.
  32. Describing sensory structure of human using models/ diagrams/ 34 charts.
  33. Describing the structure of the human eye and ear using diagrams 35 /models /charts.
  34. Identifying the main components of the male reproductive system 36 using models or diagrams.
  35. Identifying the main components of female reproductive system  using models or diagrams.
  36. Describing the gross structure of the human skull and vertebral column in relation to their functions of the various parts using models/diagrams/specimens.

  38. Sterilization of water, culture media, glassware, heat labile  substances and inoculating needles.
  39. Preparation of a microbiological culture medium (Nutrient Agar/ Potato Dextrose Agar) and inoculation with a sample of toddy/ yoghurt and observation of microbial colonies.
  40. Staining of microorganisms found in toddy or yoghurt using a simple stain (Methylene Blue)
  41. Use of alcohol and other disinfectants to control microorganisms
